The grape of Bandol

Mourvèdre

Mourvèdre is the emblematic grape of the Bandol appellation — its very backbone. Late-ripening and demanding, at La Bastide Blanche it finds the terroir that lets it express its full depth: elegance, aromatic complexity, tannic structure, remarkable ageing potential for the reds, intensity and personality for the rosés.

L'âme de Bandol

Mourvèdre is the emblematic grape of the Bandol appellation.

Mourvèdre, the identity at the heart of Bandol wines

It gives structure to every red wine and plays an active part in the identity of the appellation's rosés.

A demanding variety, it finds in Bandol the ideal conditions to reach a slow, complete ripeness: Mediterranean heat, poor soils and maritime influence. This rare combination makes it a grape of great quality, capable of producing powerful, complex wines built for ageing.

In Bandol red wines, Mourvèdre makes up at least 50 % of the blend, guaranteeing their unique style, and at least 20 % in the rosés.

Le terroir

A perfectly suited Mediterranean terroir

The Bandol vineyard enjoys a natural environment that is particularly favourable to Mourvèdre.

A contrasted climate

  • Generous sunshine and hot summers
  • The cooling influence of the Mediterranean sea
  • The cleansing Mistral wind
  • Parcels at altitudes reaching up to 400 metres

These conditions allow a gradual, even ripening of the grapes — essential to preserve balance and freshness.

Varied, structuring soils

The Bandol terroir rests on great geological diversity:

  • Clay-limestone soils: structure, power and ageing potential
  • Sandy and silty soils: finesse and aromatic elegance

This diversity contributes directly to the complexity of Bandol wines.

Le cépage

Mourvèdre: a demanding yet exceptional grape

Mourvèdre is a late-ripening variety, perfectly suited to hot, dry climates. It develops a deep root system that lets it withstand periods of drought.

It naturally produces:

  • wines rich in colour

  • powerful yet mouth-watering tannins

  • a strong capacity to evolve in the bottle

Its aromatic profile combines black fruits, spices, garrigue notes and sometimes an iodine touch linked to the nearby sea.

Au chai

Vinifying Mourvèdre in Bandol

Vinifying Mourvèdre requires great technical precision because of its high concentration of tannins and matter.

  1. For the rosés

Direct pressing is preferred, to extract fine, balanced juices. After settling, fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks preserves freshness and aromatic expression.

Bandol rosés made from Mourvèdre stand out for their structure and ageing potential — far from light aperitif styles.

  2. For the reds

The grapes are generally destemmed then vinified in tanks with a maceration of several weeks. Extraction is controlled through regular pump-overs and punch-downs.

Ageing then takes place in oak foudres for at least 18 months, to preserve the expression of fruit and terroir without marking the wine excessively with wood.

  3. And for the white wines?

No — there is no Mourvèdre in the white wines of Bandol, even though we have recently tasted some very interesting wines made from grey and white Mourvèdre.

Le style

The style of Bandol wines made from Mourvèdre

Powerful reds built for ageing

Bandol reds dominated by Mourvèdre are characterised by:

  • a solid tannic structure
  • aromas of black fruits, liquorice and garrigue
  • great aromatic complexity
  • strong ageing potential (10 to 20 years and beyond)

With time, they gain in finesse, depth and harmony.

Structured, gastronomic rosés

Unlike the light rosés of the south, Bandol rosés made from Mourvèdre are:

  • structured and vinous
  • marked by notes of citrus, spice and red fruits
  • able to age 1 to 3 years, or more

They pair perfectly with Mediterranean or gastronomic cuisine.

L'appellation

A small production with a great reputation

The Bandol appellation represents a limited production — a few hundred thousand bottles a year — making it a human-scale vineyard in the south of France.

This rarity, together with low yields and a high proportion of Mourvèdre, contributes to the international reputation of Bandol wines.

Une alliance

Bandol and Mourvèdre: a unique alliance

The pairing of the Bandol terroir and Mourvèdre creates a unique style of red wine:

  • powerful yet balanced
  • structured yet elegant
  • approachable young yet built for ageing

This relationship between intensity and finesse makes Bandol wine a benchmark among the great wines of southern France.
